Frequently Asked Questions

The BETTER Challenge FAQS

How do I sign up?

Go to Sign up form on The Better Challenge website and fill it in.

What is a Team and how do I start one?

Getting your friends, family, and colleagues involved in The Better Challenge is a great, and fun, way to stay motivated, share fundraising tips and hit your 90km together!

You can work as a team even if you’re not in the same place - everyone logs their own fundraising and milestones, and it all counts towards your team’s success!

Setting up a team is easy. You can either set one up through the signup form, or by going to the Create a Team or Workplace form.

What is an Organisation and how do I create one?

An Organisation is type of team that you can set up for your organisation or workplace. You can set up your Organisation team either through the signup form, or through the Organisation creation page (after you've signed up).

It is important to sign up as an Organisation first, and not as a Team. If you have already signed up as a Team, no worries! Send us an email at betterchallenge@tkcp.org.au and we will help you sort it out.

My friend/co-worker has set up a team – how do I join it?

Once you’ve signed up to The Better Challenge, log in to your dashboard and select ‘Join a team’. Type in the name of the team you want to join and click ‘join’.

How do I invite people to join my Team?

Direct your friends, family and workmates to sign up. They can then select ‘Join a team’ on their fundraiser dashboard and type your team name to join.

Can I sign up after 1 September?

Yes! The Better Challenge takes place from 1 September - 30 September, but you can sign up and participate - as long as you reach your 90km!

Why is the challenge in September?

September is recognised around the world as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. It’s the perfect time for us to rally together and show our support for kids with cancer and the families that support them.
The Better Challenge can be your way of doing BETTER for them.

Do I have to complete the challenge in a day/week/fortnight?

The challenge is designed to be completed throughout the month of September. This equates to about 3km a day. However, if you’d like to complete the challenge in a shorter time-frame we won’t stop you!

Who can take part?

Everyone! Whether you’re walking, running, riding or rolling - anyone can participate.

If you’re an individual, an organisation, a team, or a family, reaching 90km over 30 days is much easier than you might think.

How much does it cost to register?

Nothing. It’s free to sign up and do BETTER.

How does it work?

Sign up, spread the word with your community and get going to reach your 90km in September.

Is there a minimum amount I have to raise?

There’s no minimum amount you need to raise and no limit on the amount you can raise. We’d love you to raise as much as you can.

Every dollar you raise will help us find better treatments for kids with cancer.

How do I update my fundraising goal?

Log in to your dashboard on The Better Challenge, and click the link to 'Edit Profile'. You can update your fundraising goal whenever you like.

How can I track my km's?

Your profile page includes your personal distance tally so you can track your distance towards your target.

If you track your workouts with Fitbit, Strava or MapMyFitness your distances will automatically add to your tally. If you do not use one of these apps you can also log your fitness activities manually.

Follow these steps to track your KMs automatically:

  1. Download the Fitbit, Strava or MapMyFitness app and set up your account
  2. Log in to your account on The Better Challenge and in your Dashboard go to the My Fitness Activity page.
  3. Under the heading ‘Connect your preferred Fitness app’, click your chosen app.
  4. Follow the prompts to connect your account
  5. When you next work out, select ‘start your workout’ in the app on your phone. Once you end your workout, save your workout and your distance will be published to the tally on your page the following day.

If you have synced your app already but it is not working, please log in and reconnect it.

When using Fitbit, you must ‘start’ an activity and save it. Your daily steps will not automatically add to your page. If you are having issues, try syncing through BOTH your Fitbit and the Fitbit app on your smartphone.

Your tally will be updated each day with the previous day’s distances.

How do I bank any offline fundraising money I raise?

The best way to bank your offline fundraising money is through your online fundraising page with your credit card. Deposit the money into your bank account and then make the transaction directly onto your page using your credit card.

You can even make multiple transactions and add each donor's name and their individual messages to you.

Navigate to your fundraising profile on The Better Challenge, and use the donation widget to deposit the money.

What is the significance of 90km?

90km represents the 90 children diagnosed with cancer every month in Australia. Each kilometre you run, walk or roll shows your support for every child diagnosed.

More than 950 Australian children aged 0 – 19 are diagnosed with cancer each year. Some statistics quote 750 children aged 0 -14, however, The Kids’ Cancer Project includes adolescents and young adults and funds research to help infants and bigger kids too.

Where does the money go?

The money you raise through The Better Challenge goes to The Kids’ Cancer Project, an independent national charity with a vision for 100% survival of children with cancer while eradicating the harmful impacts treatment can bring.

Every year, The Kids’ Cancer Project invests in grants to peer reviewed scientific research projects that will lead to kinder, better treatments and cures of many different types of children’s cancers. Is there a time limit on my Better Challenge?

The Better Challenge ends on 30 September, so make sure all your donations hit your fundraising page by then. But because not everyone is as fast off the mark as you, your page will still be active six months after you first created it.
